To the Citizens of Brewer:

Each year I prepare a letter for our annual report discussing a variety of topics which might interest you. Over the past two years we have been very focused on our new building, the development, design and ultimately the move. On October 31, 2008 at 4:00 PM we officially moved our department to the new public safety building at 151 Parkway South. The move went smoothly without any interruption in service for our citizens. This was a huge undertaking as we had to transfer phone lines, computer terminals, work stations and, most importantly, staff members. We did this while maintaining the high level of law enforcement services our citizens have come to expect.

During the design of our building I spoke with many of you concerning the process, location and time frame for completion. During this time I was overwhelmed by the support shown by you for this new facility. While going through this process one often wonders: Is the building in the right location? Are the colors correct and does the layout of the building work for the staff members who will be working in the building for the next 50 to 75 years? Needless to say there were times when this was stressful. It became a labor of love; wanting to be sure we created a showcase building for the citizens of Brewer to be proud of. While designing the public safety building with state of art equipment and technology we never lost track of the fact that we needed to do so while being good stewards of tax payers’ money.

I am extremely proud of the new Brewer Public Safety Building and I honestly feel that we have provided the citizens of Brewer with a building that they can be proud of and which will serve them well for many years into the future. I have heard from a large number of people who said that they went through the building during our open house events. They commented that the design was well thought out and the floor plan has a very nice flow. Recently, while a high ranking law enforcement official from another department was visiting he commented that the building was extremely comfortable. He said it has a warm sense to it providing our staff members with an environment which will promote ownership and productivity.

I want to thank each staff member of the Brewer Police Department and Brewer Fire Department. I am convinced that the creation and completion of our new building was supported so strongly due to their commitment to our city and the people who live and work within its boundaries. Many of you have heard me comment in the past that we truly have some, if not the, finest law enforcement professionals in Maine working right here in Brewer. I want to thank them for their support, effort and continuing commitment in keeping the citizens of Brewer safe and in helping make Brewer a wonderful place to live and work.

I want to thank all city employees who helped make this building a reality. There were many individuals and departments throughout the city that played critical roles in this project’s success. Their commitment to this project was extensive and impressive. The ownership they displayed and sense of accomplishment was very apparent to everyone as we reached the opening day ceremonies. I hope they all know how much we appreciated their skills and expertise in completing this “Modern Day Jewel of Brewer”.

Lastly I want to thank the citizens of Brewer. Thank you for your ongoing support of our officers and this department. It is because of your support that we are as successful as we have been with protecting each and every person who lives, works and travels through Brewer. Due to this support we strive to do our very best, always looking to improve and attempting to cast the most positive and professional image we can. Doing the right things is extremely important to this agency and it is my belief that we function with this in mind each and every day.
