Police search for suspect in theft of moneybag

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - Bangor Daily News

BREWER - Investigators have recovered evidence they believe eventually will link a man to the theft of a moneybag from someone attempting to make a night deposit Monday, officials said Tuesday.

"The evidence we recovered is going to help us link that person to the crime," Brewer police Lt. Perry Antone said. Antone would not comment on what was recovered or disclose how much money had been taken.

On Tuesday, authorities continued to investigate the late-night theft, searching for more evidence and the 5-foot-8-inch man who the victim said took the money and ran.

The theft occurred about 9:45 p.m. Monday outside the Bank of America on Parkway South as a man from a nonprofit organization was making a night deposit. Another man, wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, approached him from behind, snatched the moneybag and ran, Antone said. The suspect fled toward the Cumberland Farms store on the corner of Wilson Street and Parkway South, Antone said.

Brewer police officers were in the area and quickly began searching for the man, aided by Penobscot County Sheriff's Department deputies and State Trooper Seth Edwards and his K-9, Boris.

The dog tracked a scent to the Clisham Road where the scent ended, Antone said.

Authorities worked into the early hours of the morning, interviewing people, searching for evidence and the suspect. Later Tuesday, detectives sought any video surveillance that might help them identify the man.

Anyone with information can contact the Brewer Police Department at 989-7001.
