Brewer robbery suspect arrested

BREWER - Tipped off Wednesday that the man wanted for last week's
robbery outside a night depository was back in town, Brewer police found
him at a local motel and arrested him.
Brian Dame, 27, of Fitchburg, Mass., was charged with robbery for the
Aug. 22 incident outside the Bank of America on Parkway South.
A man from a nonprofit organization was making a deposit about 9:45 p.m.
when he was approached from behind by a man who took the deposit bag and
ran, according to police.
Dame may have been expecting a large windfall, but Detective Sgt. Jay
Munson of the Brewer Police Department said that the deposit bag
contained mostly checks and only a few dollars in cash.
The night of the robbery, investigators recovered a change of clothing -
including a sweatshirt and bandana - and a toy gun a few hundred yards
from where the robbery took place, but they had little to go on. The
robber was described as being about 5 feet 8 inches tall and wearing a
dark-colored sweatshirt.
A break in the case came the next day when witnesses interviewed by
police reported recognizing a man running from the wooded area and
heading up to a room at the Stable Inn, Munson said. The people knew him
under a different name, an alias Dame reportedly was using.
"We didn't learn that until the next day, and by then he had already
packed up and was gone" to Massachusetts, Munson said.
On Wednesday morning, Munson was tipped off again, this time that Dame
was back in the city and was staying at the Cozy Inn.
Munson located Dame inside a motel room where he confronted the man
about the robbery and, after interviewing him, made the arrest. Dame
remained Wednesday at Penobscot County Jail unable to make bail set at
$5,000 cash.
Munson said it wasn't clear what the motive was for the robbery.
