Concealed Firearms Permit Information

The Chief of the Brewer Police Department is authorized to issue Concealed Firearms Permits which permits the permit holder to carry a concealed firearm anywhere in the State of Maine. Application must be made to the Brewer Police Department and you should allow 30 days from the date of application to receive your permit. The Brewer Police Department will call you when your permit is ready to be picked up.

Fees:

$35 for an original permit
$20 for a renewal
$ 2 for a reissued permit because of changes of residency


Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age or older

Demonstrates knowledge of handgun safety and proficiency in its use. The Brewer Police Department requires a certificate from an NRA course or other qualified course issued within the past five years to meet these criteria. An applicant who has recently been issued a concealed firearms permit or one who served in the Armed Forces of the United States may not be asked to meet this requirement.

Is not disqualified to possess a concealed firearms permit under state law Title 15 section 393, which includes but is not limited to the following:

• Convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for one year or more
• Convicted of a crime committed with the use of a firearm or a dangerous
weapon
• Convicted of a juvenile crime if committed by an adult would require
similar sentencing
Convicted of abuse of a family member (domestic violence)

Completes the application providing:

• Full name, date of birth and physical description
• Current address and addresses for past five years
• A record of previous issuances, refusals and revocations of permits
• Answers to all yes or no questions, which will demonstrate previous criminal
convictions as an adult and juvenile and be used to determine “good
moral character”
• Authorization to the Brewer Police Department to obtain limited records from
the Bangor Mental Health Institute, Acadia Hospital, Augusta Mental
Health Institute, the Courts, law enforcement agencies and the
Military to ascertain whether the information provided is true
and correct.

Other Requirements:

If you wish to renew an expiring permit, it should be done within six months after
expiring to enjoy the renewal rate. Otherwise the original application rate applies.

You must notify the Brewer Police Department of any change of address after being
issued a permit.

If you hold a permit from another jurisdiction and move to Brewer, you must apply to
Brewer for a new permit, with a $2 fee, and one will be reissued. If you move from one jurisdiction to another without notifying the new authority, your permit becomes invalid.
