Burglary

There were 6.944 burglaries reported in Maine in 2002. 33.9% of these burglaries were to a non-residence. 52.9% used forcible entry to enter the building. The average value of property stolen was $896.90. 40.2% of persons arrested were between the ages 18-24. The best way to prevent burglaries is through target hardening: securing all windows, doors and other potential entry points, good lighting, fencing and alarm systems. However, even the strongest door or the best alarm does little good if it is not locked or armed.
Maine Laws Regarding Burglary

17-A MRSA 17 §401. Burglary

“A person is guilty of burglary if the person enters or surreptitiously remains in a structure knowing that that person is not licensed or privileged to do so, with the intent to commit a crime therein.”
If a person enters, or “hides-in,” a building knowing that they are not supposed to be in the building, with the intent of committing a crime, it is burglary. The crime they intent to commit can be anything from theft to criminal mischief (vandalism).
